Responsibilities:
The Student Extern is an adjunct to the patient care team. - The
extern performs at the level that has successfully been completed
and passed in the clinical section at a local college. - Under the
general supervision of an RN the extern provides direct patient
care in accordance with the established protocols, the skills they
are able to perform are expanded. - All newly hired externs will
first function in the capacity of a nursing assistant, regardless
of their nursing program clinical level. - When the student has
been cleared by the Supervisor, they may be moved to their
appropriate skill level.

Assists with providing comprehensive nursing care including the
following:
a. Pre and post-operative preparation
b. Positioning of patients
c. Ambulation of patients
d. Dietary needs including feeding of patients
e. AM and PM care
f. Admission
g. Discharge and transfer of patients
h. Care of patient belongings and other patient care duties
Reports all unusual incidents and significant changes in the
patient's condition to the Charge Nurse.
Assists with patient teaching within the scope of knowledge as
directed by the Registered nurse.
Demonstrates the ability to accurately determine patient's vital
signs.
Charts appropriate data within the scope of practice.
Utilizes hospital equipment and supplies appropriately.
Consistently uses two patient identifiers when performing any
procedure on a patient.
Consistently ensures that all clinical alarms are not turned off or
silenced without the RN knowledge.
Is in compliance with information contained within the Infection
Control Manual (i.e. OSHA blood borne pathogen standards, CDC
Guidelines) and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective
equipment (i.e. gloves, masks and goggles) and hand washing
techniques.
Avoids and prevents injury to self and patient by applying the
principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment,
functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues
identified within the unit/facility.
Involves patient in care and allows patient to have choice and
control over situations and environment as appropriate to condition
and situation.
Explains all treatment and procedure thoroughly to patient before
they are performed.
Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:
Education and Work Experience

Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program
Must be in good and academic standing
Current Basic Life Support Certification
Certified Nursing Assistant preferred
